S.I.P Survival Guide.by John Gross, Stephanie Häußler, Elizabeth Layton, and Bryce Ward Other InfoAn increasingly essential part of every college students life is email. Writing email in Tübingen; however, is not as easy as it probably is at your American university. There is not an email lab in every building, and there is not an Ethernet connection in your dorm room. There is ONE small computer lab for the entire student body. It is located across the street from the program offices, next to the parking garage. The door is open from 8 to 5, Mon.- Fri. The rest of the time you need a card key to get in, but if you just wait around somebody will either come along with one, or come out of the building. In either case just grab the door. If you have waited awhile you may even try knocking, someone may be nice-enough to let you in. Of course just getting inside the lab is only half of the battle; you may have to wait in long lines once inside, and, of course,
you need an email account. You can get an account from the university in Tübingen. To do this, apply upstairs above the lab
after you have received your student ID number. It will take approximately 2 weeks to process your application. This means that it
will only take you about a month before you can re-establish email contact with your friends and family. Even though you can continue to use your home email account, you may still want to open an account in Tübingen.
Telneting across the Atlantic can be unbearably slow. The computers have a tendency to freeze for long periods of time so
having a back-up account can be nice. Back to top In regard, to this topic, the most essential thing to say is: Your ATM card will work most anywhere in Europe, although you will most likely pay a fee to use it. It is also important to note that the ATM-machines will not give you printouts telling you how much money you have in your account. If these two factors trouble you, you need not worry; you will open a bank account here with the start of the program. So you can bring your money in travelers checks and deposit it here if you choose. Other helpful tips from the authors of the Survival Guide: John: Drink beer, it's cheap. Elizabeth: When all else fails eat chocolate. Stephanie: Don't forget to push the Wagenhalt button before you reach the busstop. Elizabeth and Stephanie: Go in search of Campingbrotchen. Bryce: Wear your white socks with pride. All: Culture shock and homesickness will occur. Don't fret it. If you are positive, open-minded, and focus on fun you will save your Tübingen experience.
