Since 2012 the University of Tübingen – together with nine other universities and a university network – has been one of Germany's Universities of Excellence. With its concept of Research – Relevance – Responsibility: Open to New Challenges and a Global Scope of Action and three Clusters of Excellence, the University of Tübingen was once again successful in the Excellence Strategy in 2019, resulting in its Excellence status being extended for an initial period of seven years until 2026.
The University of Tübingen is currently in the process of extending its Excellence status beyond 2026. To this end, it has already successfully acquired a total of six Clusters of Excellence. The decision on whether it will retain its Excellence status will be announced in March 2026.
