Professor Malek studied medicine at Hanover Medical University between 1989 and 1996, completing his doctorate with Professor Alfred Nordheim. After entering the Hospital for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology under the direction of Professor Michael P. Manns, he was trained as a specialist for internal medicine and as a gastroenterologist. Sponsored by the DFG, he spent three years – from 1998 to 2001 – doing research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, USA, where he began his research work on molecular control of cell division. After returning to Hanover Medical University, his scientific work from 2002 to 2007 at the Institute for Molecular Biology of the MHH, under the direction of Professor Achim Gossler, was sponsored by the Max Eder Program of German Cancer Aid. In 2008, he was appointed to a W2 professorship within the framework of the REBIRTH excellence cluster of the DFG. Professor Malek has been the Medical Director of Medical Hospital 1 at the Tübingen University Clinical Centre since 2011. His clinical work mainly involves the treatment of malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver along with therapy for patients with chronic liver diseases.
