The following position is available in the Department of Linguistics of the Faculty of Humanities beginning October 1st, 2024 or soon after.

Post-Doctoral Researcher / Junior Group Leader
Linguistics / Computational Linguistics / Cognitive Science
(m/f/d; E 14 TV-L, 100%)

The position will be filled for a period of four years. Payment is at 100% of full time E14. The position is part of the project “Understanding of, and Explanations with, Large Language Models”, funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung (Momentum program), and associated with the Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science” at the University of Tübingen. The successful candidate will support the project with research on modern language technology from the point of view of Linguistics and Cognitive Science. The project entails co-supervision of PhD students and is intended as a steppingstone towards independence in academic research. A key responsibility associated with this position is the development and maintenance of a test suite, used for research and teaching, to study modern language technology such as LLMs (e.g., mechanistic interpretability, RL-based finetuning, neuro-symbolic systems).

Requirements for employment are a completed PhD in a relevant field (Computational Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Linguistics, Machine Learning, or similar), near-native level of spoken and written English, and the ability to conduct independent scientific research in an area relevant to this project (Computational Linguistics, Linguistics, Machine Learning, Cognitive Science), documented by publications in leading venues. The position requires a solid mathematical background and experience with Deep Learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch), as well as familiarity with Linguistics and/or Cognitive Science. Experience in supervising students (e.g., at undergraduate level) is welcome.

The university seeks to raise the number of women in research and teaching and therefore urges qualified women academics to apply for these positions. Equally qualified applicants with disabilities will be given preference in the hiring process. The university is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. It therefore takes individual situations into account and asks for relevant information. The employment will be handled by the central administration of the University of Tübingen.

Please send your application together with the required documents (motivation letter, extensive CV, list of publications, contact details of three potential referees) by June 19th, 2024 to Prof. Dr. Michael Franke, Keplerstr. 2, 72074 Tübingen, e-mail: sekretariat.pragmatikspam prevention@semsprach.uni-tuebingen.de.
