What do I need to do to prepare for retirement?

Before you move from working life to retirement, it is a good idea to seek advice on retirement pensions (see below). This will help you determine whether you meet all the requirements for receiving pension payments and check your insurance history. Ideally, however, you should check the current data on your insurance history, which is sent to you every few years by the pension insurance (Rentenversicherung), in order to ensure that it is correct and that there are no missing data.

It makes sense to seek advice several months before your scheduled retirement date, to ensure that you have enough time to obtain any necessary documentation regarding gaps in your insurance records.

Important: Retirement pensions are not paid out automatically; you must always apply for a pension in advance!
