International Summer School „Talent Development and Coaching in Sport”

Shortly before the start of the semester, an international 'Summer School' on Talent Development and Coaching in Sport took place at the Institute of Sports Science between the 10th and 12th October 2023. The event was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German Federal and State Governments and organized by Dr. Daniel Leyhr and Dr. Svenja Wachsmuth from the Department of Sport Psychology and Research Methods.

A total of 18 participants from the Netherlands, the USA and Tübingen attended the event. The international and multidisciplinary composition of the group enabled a lively exchange of experiences and expertise. This was especially valuable during the presentations of PhD Students and post-doctoral researchers who all had an opportunity to showcase and discuss their latest work. More specific methodological problems, such as dealing with large data sets, complex statistical analyses, and qualitative data analysis in teams, could be further be reflected upon in a ‘Research Methods Café’ on Wednesday morning. Highlights of the event were certainly also the two keynote lectures held by Prof. Dr. Rebecca A. Zakrajsek (The University of Tennessee, Knoxville; "A Humanistic Framework for Thriving through Interpersonal Relationships in Sport") and Prof. Dr. David Mann (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam; "A Framework of Biases that (might) influence Talent Identification in Sport") who both encouraged lively discussions throughout their talk. The informal character of the Summer School as well as the social program created an ideal ground for many conversations and an open exchange of ideas likely leading to further collaborations in future.
