Imperial Constellations as a Problem of Political Theory in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament and in their Cultural Contexts

Tagung der WGTh-Projektgruppe „Politische Theorie im Alten und Neuen Testament und in ihrer Umwelt“

In 2021 Joachim Krause (Bochum), Stefan Krauter (Zürich) and Wolfgang Oswald (Tübingen) founded the research group “Politische Theorie im Alten und Neuen Testament und in ihrer Umwelt”. The group is funded by the “Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Theologie.”
The upcoming conference shall investigate “Imperial Constellations as a Problem of Political Theory in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament and in their Cultural Contexts.” The qualification “as a Problem of Political Theory” indicates that we do not primarily aim at the historical reconstruction of political relations between, e.g., Judah and Persia. While historical reconstructions will of course play a role in most contributions and discussions, what we are looking for in particular are ancient texts which conceptualize the roles of the imperial powers and, where appropriate, those of the subdued nations in a way that can plausibly be considered an ancient mode of political thinking.

The conference will take place September 27-29, details are to be announced.
