Medieval German Studies participation in Teacher Training (WPO)

German teacher training study offers two Medieval German Studies seminars as introductory courses: an "Introduction to German language history and translation from Middle High German" (Proseminar I) and a Proseminar II. The introductory seminar provides fundamental historical knowledge of the language, which inform students approaches to old German texts. Central to this course are the morphological analysis and translation of Middle High German texts into modern standard German, as well as an understanding of essential components of historical grammar. Attending the lecture course "Introduction to German Medieval Studies", which is conceived as a complement to the introductory seminar, is highly recommended. Whereas the introductory seminar is an integrated single seminar, the individual proseminars are thematically different and provide literary interpretation of particular fields of study. Proseminar II involves intense work with old German texts, which are methodically and thematically analysed, within a cultural historical background. Teacher training provides a study of old German literature as a major course, in which skills and knowledge gained in introductory courses will be deepened. This course offers a comprehensive understanding of academic approaches and methods.

Exams Course

The Medieval German Studies department offers teacher training students the opportunity to attend an exams course, which is intended to prepare students for written and oral examination. In the course catalogue it is referred to as "Literarhistorische Übungen, besonders für Examenskandidaten (Literary Historical tests for Exam Candidates)". In this course selected texts from different genres will be analysed structurally, linguistically, metrically and in content and classed in their greater literary historical and cultural context. Students will practice techniques, which will assist in the translation, commentary and interpretation of medieval texts.
