PhD student (m/f/d, TV-L E13, 65 %)

Faculty of Humanities, Institute for Prehistory, Early History and Medieval Archaeology

Application deadline: 15.05.2024

The Institute of Prehistory, Early History and Medieval Archaeology at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen is seeking to fill the position of a

research assistant for doctoral studies
(m/f/d, TV-L E13, 65%, limited to three years)

as of 1 October 2024

The position is part of a cooperation project funded by the German Research Foundation with the State Office for Monument Preservation in the Stuttgart Regional Council on the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in the area west of Tübingen. Prerequisites for employment are an above-average degree (Master's) in prehistoric archaeology as well as very good knowledge of younger European prehistory.

The doctoral candidate will analyse the results of the excavations of the known Early Neolithic sites in the Ammer Valley. One aim is to develop a chronology for the sequence of Mesolithic-Early Neolithic settlement in the area between the Swabian Jura and the Black Forest on the basis of a new relative chronological sequence of pottery and the modelling of radiocarbon dates based on this. This database will be used to record natural and cultural causal relationships, which will contribute to a better understanding of the phenomenon of Neolithic land occupation in south-west Germany and place it in the overall context of cultural change in Central Europe.

The following aspects are of particular importance:

  • Evaluation of extensive Early Neolithic pottery inventories
  • Chrono-typological evaluation methods, especially by means of multivariate statistics
  • Modelling of radiocarbon dates with appropriate software applications
  • GIS-based analysis methods

We expect an open-minded approach to empirical work, the use of statistics and calibration programmes, a high willingness for interdisciplinary networking and cooperation as well as the ability to work independently and a high level of personal commitment.

Severely disabled persons with equal aptitude will be given preferential consideration. The University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity.

The University of Tübingen aims to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore invites applications from suitably qualified female academics.

Please send your written application with the usual documents (letter of motivation, CV, certificates, etc.) in electronic form as a PDF document, stating the keyword "Application Ceramics and Chronology", by 15 May 2024 by e-mail to: raiko.kraussspam prevention@uni-tuebingen.de

Recruitment is carried out by the Central Administration.
