The European Geosciences Union (EGU) has named the 49 recipients of next year’s Union Medals and Awards, Division Medals, and Division Outstanding Early Career Scientists Awards. These individuals, from both European and non-European countries, are honored for their important contributions to the Earth, planetary and space sciences. University of Tübingen geoscientist Todd Ehlers will receive the Ralph Alger Bagnold Medal. The medal has been established by the Geomorphology Division of the EGU in commemoration of the scientific achievements of Ralph Alger Bagnold, pioneer of desert exploration and first commander of the British Army's Long Range Desert Group during World War II. The award is reserved for individuals in recognition of their outstanding scientific contribution to the study of geomorphology.

Professor Ehlers, aged 47, heads the Earth System Dynamics Research Group at the University of Tübingen, Germany. The group´s research interests are in the evolution of Earth's topography as influenced by tectonics, climate, surface processes, and biota. They investigate the deformation, paleoclimate, erosion, and sedimentation in active mountain belts around the world using a range of geochemical, remote sensing, and numerical modeling tools. Ehlers will receive the Medal at the EGU 2018 General Assembly, which will take place in Vienna on 8–13 April.
