RTG Retreat 2021 (Tübingen)
On 8 and 9 March 2021, this year’s RTG retreat took place. Due to the pandemic, the RTG-meeting with the motto „Interfaces of Ambiguity“ was held online. Various supervisors (Matthias Bauer (English Literature), Martin Butz (Cognitive Science), Wolfgang Forster (Law), Robert Kirstein (Classics), Joachim Knape (Rhetoric), Christof Landmesser (Theology), Sandra Richter (German Literature), Susanne Winkler (Linguistics), Esme Winter-Froemel (Linguistics) and Angelika Zirker (English Literature)) presented ambiguity-related research data and reflected on their experience with interdisciplinary research. This year’s guests were Daniel Altshuler (University of Oxford) und Nicholas Asher (Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse). In his talk „Garden path in discourse: A look at Sylvie“, Daniel Altshuler linked so-called garden path sentences to the interpretation of literary texts. He showed that garden-path-effects do not only emerge on the sentence, but also on the text level. Nicholas Asher presented game-theoretic reflections on strategic uses of ambiguity. Interesting contributions were also made by our doctoral students: Natascha Elxnath (Linguistics) and Simon Grund (Classics) granted us valuable insights into the current state of their research projects.
