New President for the University of Tübingen

Professor Karla Pollmann took up office on October 1 - Official handover ceremony on October 18

There is a new president at the University of Tübingen. Professor Karla Pollmann took up office on October 1, 2022. She was elected in April 2022 by the University Council and the Senate to succeed Professor Bernd Engler for a six-year term.

The official handover will take place at the start of the winter semester. The ceremonial act on Tuesday, October 18, at 6:00 p.m. may be followed via livestream at https://youtu.be/8Th66YKwJH8.

Professor Karla Pollmann succeeds Professor Bernd Engler, who led the University for sixteen years. The current members of the President’s Office, Executive Vice-President Dr. Andreas Rothfuss; Professor Karin Amos, Vice-President of Student Affairs and Studies; Professor Peter Grathwohl, Vice-President of Research and Innovation; and Professor Monique Scheer, Vice-President of International Affairs and Diversity, remain in office.

Karla Pollmann was Professor of Classics and Theology and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Bristol from September 2018 until September 2022. Born in Tübingen, she studied Greek, Latin, Theology and Education in Tübingen, Munich, Cambridge and Bochum.

In 1990 she received her doctorate from the University of Bochum on early Christian didactic poetry. She completed her habilitation thesis in 1994 at the University of Constance and the following year moved to the University of St Andrews in Scotland as a lecturer in Classics. She was appointed to a professorship there in 2000.

In 2013, she accepted an appointment at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England, where she founded the Centre for Early Christianity and its Reception in 2014 and directed it until 2016. She then moved to the University of Reading as Professor of Classical Literature Literature and Head of the School of Humanities. From 2018 to 2022 she was a professor at the University of Bristol, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and a member of the University Executive Board.

Pollmann's research focuses on early Christianity, interactions between ancient Christianity and classical culture, exegesis, hermeneutics, and the reception of antiquity and early Christianity through the centuries. A particular focus of hers is the study of the work of Augustine of Hippo. She takes an interdisciplinary approach straddling Theology, Classics, and reception studies. Her re-search has been funded, among others, by the British Academy, the German Research Foundation, and the European Research Council. In 2020, she received a Humboldt Research Award.
