Brecht group: Photosynthesis & single molecule spectroscopy

Marc Brecht’s experimental research group investigates the properties of individual proteins and bio-nano hybrids using low-temperature single molecule spectroscopy (LT-SMS). At the center of the research activities are photosynthetic proteins, which are often considered as solar cells on the nanoscale due to their ability to capture light and convert it into electrical energy. These proteins are not only used to investigate their (1) specific properties, but also more generally to study (2) protein dynamics, (3) energy transfer and (4) changes in the function of the protein as a result of the interaction with plasmonic nanostructures. The research group closely cooperates with the groups Meixner/Zhang (single molecule near-field spectroscopy), Fleischer (plasmonic surfaces) and Schreiber (protein adsorption at interfaces).
